Alcohol is ruining my life - but I am not the alcoholic!

When people hear the word alcoholism, they tend to picture a person who drinks uncontrollably. What often gets left out of the conversation are the people standing next to the person with alcohol dependency — the ones quietly enduring the chaos, walking on eggshells, holding families together, and breaking down in silence.

Are you someone who is worried of someone else´s alcohol dependency or alcoholism? There is help..

The alcoholic dynamic

Understanding alcoholism and addiction requires seeing them not as moral failures or choices, but as complex, multifaceted conditions that affect the brain, behavior, and nervous system.

Addiction often begins as a coping mechanism — a way to numb pain, escape trauma, or manage stress — but over time, it rewires the brain’s reward system, making the substance feel essential for survival. This compulsion can override logic, relationships, and responsibilities.

It’s important to recognize that while the behavior may be destructive, the person is not their addiction.

Healing requires compassion, boundaries, and often professional support — for both the person struggling and those around them.

Alcoholism is a disease of denial

Denial is a well-documented psychological defense mechanism in both addiction and the family systems that surround it. Research shows that individuals with substance use disorders often minimize or rationalize their behavior to protect themselves from shame, guilt, or perceived failure. But this denial doesn’t just live in the person drinking — it spreads through the entire household. Loved ones may unconsciously enable the addiction by covering up the consequences, taking over responsibilities, or avoiding confrontation in order to keep the peace. Over time, this creates a self-sustaining cycle where dysfunction is normalized, emotional needs are suppressed, and reality becomes distorted.

Each person involved can end up playing a role that helps maintain the illusion of control, even while trust erodes and nervous systems remain on high alert. Stepping out of this cycle — by facing the truth, learning about addiction and trauma, and shifting how you respond — is a vital part of healing. It’s not about blame. It’s about breaking patterns that were never yours to carry in the first place.

Living in the Shadows of Someone Else’s Addiction

Suffering in silence and denial: Are they really an Alcoholic?

It’s easy to convince yourself it’s not that bad. After all, they’re not drinking every day. They have a job. They’re “functional.” But addiction doesn’t have to look extreme to be destructive — especially for the people living closest to it.

Someone close to an alcoholic often becomes hypervigilant — scanning the room for subtle shifts in mood, learning to read silence as a warning sign. Plans become unpredictable. Evenings can flip from calm to chaos in moments. One second there’s laughter; the next, defensiveness against irrational accusations or passive-aggressive comments fueled by alcohol.

They become the peacekeeper. The fixer. The one who explains away the drinker’s behavior to the children, to friends, to themselves. They lie — not just to others, but inwardly — to maintain the illusion of control. Because acknowledging the truth feels terrifying. And yet, deep down, they know: this is not normal, and it is not okay.

In the shadows of Alcohol Dependency: When Love Becomes a Battleground

What makes this even more painful is love. The person still loves the alcoholic — and that’s part of the trap. Addiction isn’t just about substances; it’s about connection that’s become fractured, distant, and unpredictable.

They may believe they can help. That if they just love the person more, support them better, give fewer ultimatums, stay calm, try harder — they’ll finally stop. But the painful reality is: no one can love someone sober. And the longer someone stays in that cycle, the more pieces of themselves they lose.

The Invisible Impact of Alcoholism on Families is devastating

You don’t have to drink to be destroyed by alcohol. The partner, the child, the sibling — they may suffer from depression, anxiety, insomnia, and emotional exhaustion. They may question their sanity, pull away from friendships, and carry a constant weight of guilt or confusion. Often, they feel silenced because they’re “not the one with the problem.”

But they do have the right to speak up. And so do you.

If these words resonate — know this: you are not crazy. You are not weak. You are not alone.

Breaking the Cycle of Alcoholism: Acceptance and Detachment

When enough is enough

Detaching from someone else’s addiction is not simple — especially when you’re deeply connected, whether as a caregiver, partner, or parent. But it is possible. And it starts with reclaiming your right to set boundaries, to protect your peace, and to begin healing — even if the other person never changes.

Letting go of the need to fix, help, or rescue is one of the hardest — and most healing — things you can do. It begins with a powerful sentence:
“This is not my fault, and I am not responsible for their drinking.”

How Recovery Coaching can help you create real change

The path forward can include therapy, trauma recovery, education, and support groups. Healing doesn’t come from saving the alcoholic. Healing comes from choosing yourself.

But often, people need more than support — they need transformation. While therapy, counselling, and support groups can help process emotions and provide a place to be heard, my coaching offers something different: a forward-focused, holistic process that combines healing, education, and practical strategies for real change.

In our work together, I integrate NLP coaching, nervous system regulation, trauma healing, and breathwork, helping you not only understand your patterns but also rewire them. Unlike traditional talk therapy, this process moves beyond reflection into embodied, sustainable action.

A key part of my approach is educational — helping you understand the hidden dynamics beneath addiction, such as codependency, emotional dysregulation, and the deep impact of growing up in chaotic or unpredictable environments. I also support you in exploring how addiction is often linked to underlying conditions like autism, ADHD, bipolar disorder, or personality disorders — patterns that are frequently misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or completely overlooked in traditional systems.

This is more than support — it’s a space for deep clarity, nervous system repair, and personal empowerment. You’ll walk away with not just insights, but tools, strategies, and a renewed sense of who you are — beyond the role you’ve been surviving in.

Alcoholic Relatives Recovery Coaching

I offer a specialised, holistic coaching process for people who struggle helping their loved one with addictions or mental health — whether that’s a partner, parent, sibling, child, or friend. My approach combines education, mentorship, coaching, NLP, and nervous system work with breathwork and emotional healing tools. Together, we explore the links between addiction, trauma, neurodiversity, and the alcoholic family system so you can begin to make sense of your experience and reconnect with your own inner strength.

This is not just about surviving someone else’s addiction. It’s about understanding yourself more deeply, restoring your nervous system, building healthy boundaries, and reclaiming your power.

You don’t have to carry this alone.
Healing starts when you choose yourself.

ONLINE COACHING FROM THE COMFORT OF YOUR HOME

My coaching is designed to help you gently move forward — with compassion, clarity, and practical tools. All sessions are held online via Zoom, and we do things a little differently to support your comfort and focus.

Once we’ve connected and built some initial trust, we turn our cameras off. This creates a safe and distraction-free space where you’re not worried about how you look or being watched — so you can fully drop into the experience. I guide you with my voice, helping you quiet the noise, access your subconscious mind, and shift from overwhelm into insight. This process is forward-focused, solution-oriented, and empowering. Together, we uncover practical strategies, reshape limiting beliefs, and help you reconnect with your own inner resources.

Why Some Clients Feel Worse After Breathwork (and How to Prevent It)

Breathwork is often described as calming, regulating, or even transformational. And for many people, it is. But for others, breathwork can feel uncomfortable, overwhelming, or even destabilising. When this happens, it’s not because the client or coach is “doing it wrong” — it’s usually because the breathwork wasn’t matched to their nervous system, history, or capacity in that moment.

Understanding why some clients feel worse after breathwork is essential for anyone who wants to integrate breathwork into their professional work safely and ethically.
